The Venue

Chellaston Community Centre is in a lovely location, close to the shops. It was born in the 1980s when a group of local residents decided a dedicated venue would be beneficial to offer a range of clubs and activities to the people of the ‘village’ fundraising began in earnest and the building opened in 1988. It is soon to become the latest venue for Konga in Derby. The main hall is large, airy and cheerful, so you’ll have plenty of room to work your beautiful bodies, even in busy classes. There’s lots of parking outside and is the perfect venue if you live here or any of the surrounding villages, like Melbourne, Aston on Trent, Ticknall, Barrow on Trent or Weston on Trent. Sinfin, Alvaston and Allenton are also nearby.

Things you may not know about Chellaston

• Chellaston is a large suburb today, but in medieval times was only a village, and even by the mid-18th century, only had 42 houses!
• There’s a rumour that Robin Hood was born at a Manor House in Chellaston but despite the local sheriff of the time having associations with Chellaston, this has never been substantiated
• By the 19th century, Chellaston was one of the largest producers of mined alabaster, which was used to produce Nottingham alabaster, in the United Kingdom
• Using local canals, it exported poor grades of alabaster (gypsum) all over Derby and the potteries, where Josiah Wedgewood used it for his pottery moulds.
• Chellaston has six pubs, including The Bonnie Prince, which was once a fine private house called Home Lea.
• It also has a Co-op, post office, Tesco Express, a garage, Cantonese takeaway and four schools.
